Scope & Material & Tolerance
ASME B36.19M is the standard specification for both welded and seamless stainless steel pipes. These stainless steel pipes may be used for high or low temperatures and pressures. This dimensional standard not only can be applied to wrought stainless steel pipes but can also be extensively applied to non-ferrous alloy pipes such as titanium, zirconium, copper and aluminum. Pipes conforming to ASME B36.19M dimensions shall be manufactured in accordance with relative ASTM and ASME material specification. The variations in dimensions or dimensional tolerances differ depending upon the method of manufacture employed in making the pipe to various specifications available. Permissible variations or tolerances are indicated in each specification.
Size & End Preparation
ASME B36.19M covers dimensions of pipes sized from NPS 1/8 (DN 6) to NPS 30 (DN 750). Sizes larger than 30″ are also commercially available in accordance with ASME B36.10M. Pipes NPS 12 (DN 300) and smaller have outside diameters numerically larger than their corresponding nominal sizes. Pipes NPS 14 (DN 350) and larger have outside diameter numerically equal to the corresponding nominal sizes. Pipes conforming to ASME B36.19M may be furnished with plain ends (PE), butt welding ends (BW), threaded ends, and grooved ends.
Wall Thicknesses & Weights
There are 4 schedule designations for stainless steel pipes conforming to ASME B36.19M: SCH 5S, SCH 10S, SCH 40S, SCH 80S. The nominal wall thicknesses for NPS 14 (DN 350) to NPS 22 (DN 550), inclusive, of SCH 10S; NPS 12 (DN 300) of SCH 40S; and NPS 10 and NPS 12 (DN 250 and DN 300) of SCH 80S are not the same as those of ASME B36.10M. The suffix "S" in the schedule number is used to differentiate B36.19M pipe from B36.10 pipe. The selection of wall thickness for a particular application shall be in conformance to relevant requirements prescribed by ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Codes or ASME B31 Codes.
The nominal weights (masses) of stainless steel pipe can be calculated using the following two formulas (if the formulas are applied to non-ferrous materials other than steel such as titanium, zirconium, or copper alloy, distinctive rectification factor shall be multiplied for each):
- Wt = 10.69 ( D - t ) t; Wt: weight of pipe in lb/ft; D: outside diameter of pipe in inch; t: wall thickness in inch.
- Wt' = 0.0246615 ( D - t ) t; Wt': weight of pipe in kg/m; D: outside diameter of pipe in mm; t: wall thickness in mm.
